The fastest way to set up smart lighting is to do it in the right order: check your switch box first, choose whether you are making the switch or the bulb smart, pick the network your devices will talk on, and only then start buying. Most smart lighting projects that go wrong in Singapore go wrong at step one — a smart switch is bought for a switch box that has no neutral wire, or a bulb is paired to a 5 GHz WiFi band it cannot see. This guide walks through the whole setup in seven steps, with the HDB and condo details that global guides leave out.

What is smart lighting, exactly?

Smart lighting is any lighting you can control without walking to the switch — from an app, a voice assistant, a sensor or a schedule. The light itself is still an LED; what changes is where the “on” decision is made. In a smart lighting system that decision moves into a controller: a smart switch on the wall, a smart bulb in the fitting, or a smart driver behind your downlights and cove strips. Everything else — scenes, dimming, motion, holiday mode — is built on top of that one idea.

Before you buy: three checks that decide everything

Do these three checks before you add anything to a cart. They take ten minutes and they determine which products will actually work in your home.

  • 1. Is there a neutral wire in the switch box? Turn off the circuit at the DB box, unscrew the switch plate and look. Many Singapore switch boxes carry only a live and a switched live — no neutral. That single fact rules out most neutral-required smart switches.   • 2. What is in the ceiling? Retrofit downlights and cove strips usually run off a driver, not a screw-in bulb. If there is no E27 or B22 fitting to unscrew, smart bulbs are not an option — you are choosing between a smart switch and a smart driver.
  • 3. Does WiFi reach the switch box? Stand at the switch with your phone and check the signal. Switch boxes sit inside walls, often at the far end of a corridor. If the signal is one bar there, fix the home network before you install anything that depends on it.

Step 1: Choose your control layer — switch, bulb or driver

Every smart lighting setup is one of three shapes, and mixing them badly is the most common cause of a system nobody uses:

Step 2: Pick the network before the brand

Your lights have to talk to something. In practice you are choosing between three options, and the choice caps how many lights you can add later:

  • WiFi — no hub, fastest to start, but every bulb and switch becomes another device on your router. Fine for a handful of points; it gets fragile once a whole flat is on it.
  • Zigbee — needs a hub, but the devices form their own mesh and each mains-powered switch strengthens it. This is what most whole-home installs in Singapore run on.
  • Matter (often over Thread) — the cross-brand standard, so a device works with Google Home, Apple Home and Alexa rather than one of them. Still needs a hub or border router.

Step 3: Install — in this order

Once the parts are chosen, the physical work is straightforward if you follow the sequence:

  1. Kill the power at the DB box and confirm it is dead at the switch with a tester, not by flipping the light on.
  2. Fit the wall devices first — switches and drivers — because they define the circuits everything else sits on.
  3. Check the box depth. Smart switches are deeper than the plate they replace, and a Singapore three-gang box with existing wiring can be tight. Bring a deeper back box rather than forcing the plate.
  4. Then fit the bulbs and lamps, which need no wiring at all.
  5. Power up one circuit at a time so any fault is obvious.

One rule that is not optional: in Singapore, work on your fixed electrical installation should be done by a Licensed Electrical Worker. Step 4: Pair the devices — and the 2.4 GHz trap

This is where most Singapore setups stall, and it has nothing to do with the lights. Nearly every smart bulb and smart switch on the market is 2.4 GHz only. Modern mesh routers, including the ones the local ISPs supply, broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name and steer your phone to 5 GHz. Your phone is on 5 GHz, the bulb can only see 2.4 GHz, and pairing fails with a useless “device not found”.

Three ways out, in order of preference:

  • Split the bands temporarily in your router app — create a separate 2.4 GHz network name, pair everything to it, then re-merge if you want.
  • Keep a permanent 2.4 GHz IoT network for smart devices. This is what we set up on most installs; it also keeps your smart gear off the same network as your laptops.
  • Pair next to the router, where the 2.4 GHz signal is strongest, then move the device.

If you use Zigbee or Matter over Thread instead, this problem disappears — the devices never touch your WiFi at all.

Step 5: Name everything properly, once

Voice control lives or dies on names. Set the room in the app before you name the device, then keep names short and spoken-out-loud natural: “Living Room Ceiling”, not “LR DL 01”. Do it at setup, because renaming later means re-teaching every scene, every routine and every person in the house. Step 6: Build three scenes, not thirty

A scene is one tap that sets several lights at once. Systems that get used tend to have three of them, matched to the times of day people actually change the lighting:

  • Morning — bright, cool white in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Evening — warm and dimmed in the living and dining areas.
  • Night — everything off except a low corridor or bathroom light for the walk at 3am.

Add automation only where it removes a decision: motion in the corridor, yard and bathroom; a sunset trigger for the living room; an “all off” when the last person leaves. Step 7: Test the ways it will fail

Before you call the setup finished, break it on purpose:

  • Flip the wall switch off. If you used smart bulbs, they are now dead to the app. This is the number one complaint after installation — fix it with a smart switch in decoupled mode, where the wall switch sends a command to the hub instead of cutting power to the bulb.

  • Hand a guest the room. If a visitor cannot turn the light on without your phone, the wall control is wrong.

What smart lighting actually costs to run

Smart lighting is a convenience upgrade, and it is worth being straight about the electricity side. The regulated household tariff in Singapore is 34.78 cents per kWh including GST for 1 July to 30 September 2026 (SP Group). Ten 7 W downlights running five hours a day use about 10.5 kWh a month — roughly S$3.65. Dimming and motion sensors will trim that, but they will not transform your bill: households account for 14.6% of Singapore’s electricity consumption (8 TWh in 2024, EMA), and in a local home the aircon dominates that number, not the lights. How do I set up smart lighting for the first time?

Check your switch box for a neutral wire, decide whether the switch, the bulb or the driver becomes smart, then choose the network (WiFi, Zigbee or Matter). Do I need a hub for smart lighting?
